But Mingus was the one that really pushed me away from the idea and forced me into thinking about having an individual sound and concept.” McLean (born in New York on May 17, 1931; he died on March 31, 2006, at the age of 73) is featured here on his LP New Soil. Although it wasn’t the first session he recorded for Blue Note, it was the first one released. As the titlesuggests, McLean’s main goal on this album was to go beyond the limits of bop.

PERSONNEL:
JACKIE McLEAN, alto sax
DONALD BYRD, trumpet
WALTER DAVIS Jr., piano
PAUL CHAMBERS, bass
PETE LA ROCA, drums
Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, May 2, 1959.

(*) BONUS TRACKS:
Same personnel except SAM JONES (bass) & ART TAYLOR (drums).
Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, May 31, 1959.
[Originally issued on Walter Davis’ LP Davis Cup (Blue Note BLP4019)].

Tracklist

A1 Hip Strut 11:15
A2 Minor Apprehension 7:30
A3 Loodle-Lot 5:59
B1 Greasy 7:30
B2 Sweet Cakes 6:41
B3 Davis Cup 5:25
B4 Millie’s Delight 5:07

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0964/8324/6424/files/jackie-mclean-new-soil-import-new-vinyl-lp-471685.jpg?v=1780466481
